Coffee with a recruiter changed my whole view on cover letters

I met up with a recruiter I know from a local networking thing in Austin last Thursday. She told me flat out that she skips cover letters 90% of the time unless the job is super niche. She said hiring managers usually just glance at the resume for 6 seconds max. That hit different because I spent like 2 hours tailoring each cover letter for months. Now I'm wondering if I should just dump the effort into optimizing my resume instead. Has anyone else heard similar from recruiters in their field?

Oh man, a friend of mine in tech spent like three weeks crafting cover letters for every application she sent out. Then she found out one of her old coworkers was a hiring manager and he said he hadn't read a cover letter in two years. She was so mad she almost deleted her whole portfolio lol.
