The old trick for fixing honeycomb that I stopped using

I used to patch honeycomb spots on walls with a dry mix and a rubbing stone. It worked okay but took forever and looked rough half the time. About 2 years ago I switched to using a slurry of cement and water brushed into the voids before the final set. It bonds way better and the finish matches the surrounding concrete almost perfect. Now I only patch dry if it's a tiny nick smaller than a dime. Anyone else find a better way to deal with honeycomb on vertical pours?

Vent: My domino bit snapped mid-mortise on a $3k cherry table job

I was in my shop last Tuesday routing out mortises for a dining table when the bit caught a knot and sheared off at the collet. Had to scrap the rail and recut it, which set me back 2 hours and taught me to always check for hidden grain defects before plunging in.

Swapped my stainless pan for carbon steel and it's night and day difference

I spent 2 years using this expensive All-Clad stainless skillet and could never get a good sear on chicken thighs without them sticking like crazy. Picked up a cheap carbon steel pan from a restaurant supply store in Chicago last month and my first attempt came out perfect with zero sticking. Has anyone else made the switch and found one type of pan just works better for certain foods?

Tried a 180 ton Grove to place a precast panel on a tight site downtown yesterday

Ngl I figured the smaller 100 ton would be fine but the reach and load chart just didn’t work out so the bigger crane barely fit in the alley and I ended up swinging blind because one outrigger was over a utility vault, has anyone else had to call a bigger crane than planned for a tight spot and how’d you handle the setup?

Threw $50 down the drain on a cheap chain tool mistake

I tried to save a few bucks by buying a no-name chain tool off Amazon last month. It snapped on the third link I tried to push out, and I ended up mangling a $35 chain in the process. By the time I bought a proper Park Tool replacement, I was out nearly $85 for what should have been a $40 fix. Anyone else learn this lesson the hard way with budget tools that just don't hold up?

Did a 3-month migration test and my spreads got 40% worse

I saw a post on the bujo sub last week about someone tracking their habit streaks for 90 days. I figured hey, I'll give it a shot. So I migrated all my monthly logs into a fresh notebook and started fresh. By week 6, my layout was a mess. I was forgetting to fill in half the boxes. Found out yesterday that my completion rate dropped from like 70% to 30%. I guess switching notebooks mid-year threw off my groove. Has anyone else seen a dip after migrating to a new journal?

Shoutout to vinegar and baking soda for clearing my stuck bathroom sink drain

I tried a $8 bottle of Drano and it didn't do squat, so I poured about a cup each of white vinegar and baking soda down there, waited 10 minutes, then flushed with hot water. The gunk came loose like magic and I saved that money for a new faucet handle I'm fixing next week. Anyone else have a weird cheap combo that actually works better than store stuff?

Spilled engine oil on my concrete floor and tried a $12 cat litter trick

I was changing the oil on my '92 Miata last weekend in Phoenix and dropped the drain pan, leaving a big puddle on the garage floor. Grabbed a bag of cheap clumping cat litter from the dollar store to soak it up, figured it couldn't hurt since I was out of kitty litter. Has anyone else used cat litter for messy spills in their garage, or is there a better budget trick I should know about?

That week my lift install went sideways changed my whole garage plan

I spent three days building a custom workbench last month, then realized my new 2-post lift made it impossible to open my car doors on the driver side. A buddy with a 30 year old setup told me to scrap the bench and go with a rolling tool cart system instead, and it freed up so much space I actually have room for a second project now. Has anyone else had to completely redo their garage layout after putting in a lift?

Built my desk 2 inches too low for 3 years before my neck gave out.

Spent all that time hunched over like a gargoyle until a buddy snapped a photo of me working and I saw my spine looked like a question mark. Anyone else figure out their ergonomics were off from a random picture?
