I used to just take any job that came my way, now I ask a lot more questions first

A couple years back, I took a fencing job in a new subdivision that ended up being a total mess, the ground was all clay and rock. I lost money on it because my bid was way off. Now, before I even give a quote, I go out and check the soil myself, ask about underground lines, and get a feel for the access. It probably saves me from one or two bad jobs a year. Anyone else have a specific thing they started checking for that saved them a headache?

Yeah, that's just learning from getting burned. I see it everywhere now, like people checking restaurant reviews instead of just walking in. A little upfront work saves so much trouble later.

Totally, and it's like what @nina_hall said about reviews. That same idea of checking first shows up everywhere once you look for it. Like reading the manual for a new gadget for five minutes instead of fighting with it for an hour. Or watching a trailer before you commit to a two hour movie. It's all about that tiny bit of effort upfront to avoid the big frustration later.
