Unpopular opinion: applying to 5 jobs a day got me nowhere, but 2 a week got me 3 interviews
I spent almost a year blasting out apps, like 150 of them, and got two callbacks total. My cousin in Phoenix told me to stop doing that and spend real time on just a few. So I tried it, picked 2 postings a week, rewrote my resume to match each one, and messaged a recruiter on LinkedIn for every single one. Within 6 weeks I had 3 interviews and one offer for $8k more than my old pay. The annoying part is that it takes way more work per app, like 90 minutes each, but the hit rate is not even close. Anyone else tried quality over quantity and felt dumb for not doing it sooner?
Man, the part nobody talks about is the resume robots. When you send 150 apps, most of them get filtered out by software before a human ever sees them, so you're basically throwing paper into a black hole. With only 2 a week you can actually look up who the hiring manager is and find a way around the filter, which is probably why your hit rate jumped. The 90 minutes per app stings but you're getting paid for that time eventually, unlike the spray and pray method.
