Why does nobody talk about asking for the salary range before the first interview
A recruiter in Columbus asked me my number first thing last Tuesday, so I threw out $52k. Later that day I saw the same listing on their site with $58k to $66k posted. Three years of interviews and I always gave a number first because I thought being cagey made me look hard to work with. Now I ask for their range before I say anything, and the last two callers gave it up with no pushback. It feels less like a trick and more like letting the other side go first in cards. If you already do this, what's your exact line when they dodge the question?
When they dodge with the old "it depends on the role" line, I just stay quiet for a second and say something like "totally get it, but I don't want to waste your time either, can you give me a ballpark for the budget on this one?" Keeping it friendly but not letting it drop worked better for me than being blunt. One recruiter tried the "what are you making now" redirect and I said my pay now is set for my current job and I'd rather focus on what this role pays. Took a couple times to get comfortable saying it out loud, your mileage may vary depending on the recruiter. Some will still push back and that tells you something about how they operate.
