I finally ditched my speed square for a bevel gauge on crown molding
I was doing a crown molding job in a old house out in Portland where none of the corners were square, took me three tries to get one joint right. A guy named Hank who was trimming out the next room over showed me how to use a sliding bevel gauge to transfer the angle instead of guessing with the square. Has anyone else had to adjust their tool setup when working in really old buildings?

Have you tried scribing the joint after you get the bevel set? On those old Portland houses with the wonky plaster walls, I'll take the bevel gauge trace onto a scrap block then sneak up on the cut with a coping saw for the inside corners. Makes a huge difference when the walls are out of whack by a quarter inch or more.
