My old boss in Boise said never trust a laser level for stairs, and he was right
Back when I was framing in Boise, my boss Dale told me to always string line my stair runs instead of trusting my laser, and I figured he was just stuck in his ways. I ignored him on a set of 16 risers and ended up 3/8 inch out of level at the top, which meant pulling treads and re-cutting stringers on my own time. What checks do you all run on stairs before you commit to the cuts?
Curious what your setup was when you got burned. Were you shooting the laser from the bottom landing up the whole run, or were you moving it and re-leveling partway? And did you check it against a level or plumb line first, or just trust the bubble right out of the case? I ask because lasers drift on you, especially if the tripod gets bumped or the thing sits in the sun for a bit. Dale's string line trick works because it doesn't care about any of that.
