Thought a 4 dollar pull saw from the salvage bin was junk, then it cut better than my good one
Last month I grabbed a beat up pull saw out of a bin at a salvage yard in Fresno for $4, mostly just to have a beater for rough trim. I figured the teeth were shot and it was a waste, but I tried it on some 1x pine anyway and it tracked straighter than the saw I normally reach for. The handle is ugly and the blade has a little rust near the tip, yet it cuts clean and fast. Now I'm wondering if I've been overpaying for saws this whole time, has anyone else found a cheap used tool that flat out worked better than the pricey one?
Man, this happens way more than people want to admit. I've noticed the same thing with kitchen stuff, expensive knives that need constant care versus a cheap carbon steel one that just works, and with garden tools too. There's this whole idea that price equals quality, but a lot of the time you're just paying for the name on the handle. That old saw probably got broken in by someone who used it every day, which honestly says more than a fancy label ever could.
