Tried pocket hole plugs on a beech butcher block countertop

Sanded them flush and the grain matched up so well they basically disappeared. Anyone else had that luck with a specific wood species?

Didn't you read something about hickory being a real pain for that? I swear I saw a woodworking blog talking about how it's so porous the plugs never blend in. Beech I've heard is more forgiving, the grain is pretty tight and uniform. I used oak plugs on red oak once and they just melted in, no sanding even needed. My experience with maple was okay but not perfect. Your mileage may vary on darker woods like walnut.

Oh man, I totally used to swear by oak plugs for everything. Thought if it worked on red oak it'd work on anything close to it. But you're right about hickory, I tried it once on a shelf project and those plugs stood out like a sore thumb. Beech is definitely the move for tricky grain, I messed around with it on some drawer fronts and it blended way better than I expected. Gonna have to eat my words on this one, lol.
