Shoutout to the random redditor who told me to stop cropping cat memes too tight
I used to make these super zoomed in cat pics where the face filled the whole frame. Thought it looked hilarious. Then some user with a username like FluffyButt420 commented that the joke lands way better when you see the cat's paws or the weird background context. I shrugged it off for like 2 weeks. Then I remade one of my older memes with the full body shot and the comments tripled. My favorite was a grumpy cat sitting on a tiny chair with the caption "this is my meeting now." Cropped, it's just a face. Full view, it's comedy gold. Do you guys ever leave space in your meme templates on purpose or is it all about the punchline for you too?

The background is half the joke, honestly. I started leaving more space around my cat templates after a similar tip, and now I frame it so you can see the cat is sitting on something ridiculous or staring at a random object in the room. Like, a close up of a cat's face with "this is my meeting now" is fine, but with the tiny chair and the wall calendar behind it, you get the whole story. The punchline hits harder when your eyes have somewhere to wander first. I still crop tight for reaction memes, but for anything with a caption, I leave at least a third of the frame for context. It feels like wasted space at first, but it's basically free setup for the joke.
