The meme format nobody uses right anymore

I keep seeing people slap old Impact font on pictures from 2015 and call it a meme. My cat did the weird loaf thing last Tuesday and I made a simple top text bottom text joke, worked fine. But people are doing these 5 layer edits with 3 different fonts and I can't even read them. Whats wrong with just a clean caption and a cat photo? Anyone else tired of overdone templates or am I just old?

5 layer edits with 3 different fonts" hit me right in the soul. I'm 34 and I still think a meme is just a picture with white text, so take my opinion with a whole shaker of salt. My last attempt at a "modern" meme took me an hour in some free editor and it still looked like a ransom note written by a pigeon. I miss when the joke was the point, not the layers of effects. But honestly, I once put a caption on a photo of my foot by accident and thought it was funny, so maybe I'm not the best judge.
