Got roasted for my charging cable setup and had to fix it

A guy at the Portland EV meetup told me my extension cord was a fire hazard because it was rated for 12 amps on a 16 amp charger. I swapped it for a 14-gauge heavy duty one from Home Depot for $25 and now it barely gets warm. Anyone else get called out by the EV nerds for something you thought was fine?

Roasting someone over a hot extension cord is basically an EV rite of passage at this point. 140 degrees at the plug is genuinely sketchy though, that's how fires start. Good on you for swapping it out before something bad happened.

My buddy Mark showed up to a group charge session with a regular orange extension cord that was practically cooking after 20 minutes. Someone pulled out a thermal camera and showed him it was hitting 140 degrees right at the plug connection. He switched to a 10-gauge welding cord the next week and now he’s the one calling out other people’s setups. It’s like once you know better you can’t help but notice all the sketchy stuff people are doing with their chargers out here.
