Warning: Spend $60 on a cheap mandoline and you'll regret it fast

I bought a no-name mandoline from Amazon for $60 and it wouldn't slice evenly after 3 days. Ended up cutting my thumb on a flimsy guard. Anyone have a brand that's actually worth the money?

Saw a serious chef on YouTube say the same thing about cheap mandolines, they're basically toys. The blade chatter alone makes them dangerous. Ended up grabbing a Benriner after reading a bunch of reviews and it's night and day. That thing slices through a potato like butter and the guard actually stays put. Cost me around $40 on Amazon and it's held up for over a year now, no rust or wobble. Those cheap ones are a gamble, sometimes you get lucky but mostly you don't.

Man it's funny you mention that because I've noticed the same thing with tons of stuff these days. It's like the whole world is split between cheap junk you buy twice and that one solid tool you get once and forget about. I think people just get used to replacing broken stuff every few months and don't realize how much money they're throwing away. The Benriner thing is a perfect example though, there's always that one brand or model that just works and everyone who knows their stuff points you to it. Kinda makes you wonder what else in our lives we're settling for the flimsy version of.
