Finally figured out why my brush was leaving black streaks on brick after I switched to a new brand of soot remover

Turns out I was using too much water in the mix, so after cutting it back by half a cup the streaks disappeared completely and now I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with the same issue on old lime mortar chimneys.

Lime mortar is finicky like that, for sure.

Did you catch that episode of "Ask This Old House" where Tom was talking about how too much water in soot remover messes with the mineral bonds in old brick? I remember him saying if you get it too wet it leaves that weird chalky residue instead of cleaning right.
