Siliconized caulk wrecked my first firebox repair job

3 months ago I patched a crack in a firebox with regular high-temp caulk like I always do. Customer called me back last week saying smoke was seeping through the wall. Turns out someone used siliconized caulk before me and it didn't bond right with the new stuff. Spent 4 hours grinding it all out and redoing it. Now I always torch test a small spot first to see if old caulk is siliconized. Anyone else run into this with old repairs?

Did you try heating it up first to see how it reacts?

Wait did you actually try that or are you just guessing? Curious if it gets weird or just sits there.
