Learned the hard way: indoor vs outdoor storage for my '73 Mustang

I had to decide between keeping my '73 Mustang in my garage with no climate control or paying $250 a month for an indoor facility. I figured my garage would be fine since I'd drive it every weekend and keep it clean. After 8 months I found surface rust on the fender edges and the seats were getting that damp smell from the humidity swings. I moved it to the indoor place in March and the difference is night and day - no more moisture issues. Has anyone else tried using dehumidifiers in a regular garage or am I stuck paying for storage forever?

Hold up, I gotta disagree with your buddy's story. A dehumidifier only works if you size it right for the space and seal the garage decently. My neighbor ran one in his uninsulated shop and it did nothing too, but that's because he had a crawlspace vent open and a leaky door seal. I ran one in my old detached garage for two years with a classic car and it kept the tool rust down and the interior dry as long as I kept the door closed and the unit draining outside. The problem is most people just grab the small cheap one from the big box store and expect it to fight a whole garage. That's not how it works.

Dude that sucks! My buddy Rick tried the whole dehumidifier in his garage thing with his old Camaro and it barely helped. He said it just ran up his electric bill and the rust still showed up under the carpet after a year.
