Solar panels vs. community solar: which actually makes more sense?
I used to think putting panels on my own roof was the only real climate action move, but after talking to neighbors in Chicago who went in on a community solar plot, I'm torn. My roof setup cost $14k upfront and saves me about $80 a month, but their shared array cost zero initial and cuts their bill by 15% each month. Which way do you lean if you can't afford the upfront hit?

I went with a small loan for my own panels, monthly payment was less than the electric bill was costing me.

Nah but what if your roof gets hailed on though?

So you're saying a loan made your monthly payment less than your old electric bill? Cool, but what happens when that loan ends and your panels start degrading? My neighbor's community solar is locked in at 15% off for 20 years no maintenance no inverter replacements no cleaning the panels after every Chicago snowstorm. You're basically making payments on a depreciating asset while community solar gives you savings without owning a thing. Plus if your roof needs replacing in 10 years you're paying to uninstall and reinstall those panels. Call me skeptical but tied up cash plus hidden costs don't beat zero upfront and predictable savings.
