Appreciation post: a scrap bin argument in Dallas changed my mind on slower cut speeds
I always ran .125 mild steel hot because it felt faster, and a guy at a machine demo in Dallas told me he runs his table at 60 percent of the book speed and gets longer consumable life. I thought he was nuts, so I timed a run with my usual settings and got 18 minutes before the tip started to go. Same part at his slower setting took 22 minutes but the tip looked clean at the end. I pulled the charts on my Hypertherm and sure enough the recommended range was way lower than where I had been cutting. Has anyone else found a sweet spot on thin plate, or am I just late to this?
