I spent two weekends stuck on chapter 4 of a Python book, then he told me to just make a grocery list script, and I had it working in about 40 minutes, so now I'm wondering if I wasted those weeks on exercises nobody actually uses.
Chapter 4 of most Python books is loops and lists, and that grocery script used both, so you didn't waste those weeks, you just front loaded the boring part. The exercises are not useless either, they are just bad at showing you why the thing matters until you build something with it. Do both: keep the book around for when you hit a wall and need the why behind something.
