My friend told me to skip the basics and jump right into building a game
He said I'd learn faster by making something real, so I tried to make a simple platformer in Python. I got stuck for three days just trying to make a character move correctly because I didn't understand functions. I had to go back and do a full tutorial on Codecademy to get the foundation I missed. Has anyone else tried to rush ahead and hit a wall like that?

Oh man, my buddy tried that with learning guitar. He skipped all the chords and just tried to play his favorite song right away. He spent a whole week just trying to get his fingers to move right for the intro, and it sounded awful. He finally had to go back and learn the basic chords he was missing. It totally set him back further than if he just started slow. Some stuff you just can't skip.

It's like trying to build a house without a foundation, it just falls apart.

Exactly, you gotta crawl before you can walk. It's tempting to jump to the fun part, but missing the basics just makes everything harder later. That foundation is everything.
