That barista who remembered my order for 8 months straight
I worked from the same cafe in Austin for about 8 months, and there was this one barista, Maya. Every single morning she would hand me a flat white with oat milk before I even reached the counter. One day she was gone, and I asked the new guy if she quit. He said she moved to Seattle for a coffee program, and she left a note for me that just said "your default order is safe here." It hit me that I never actually knew her name until that moment, and I never even tipped her extra for that kindness. Has anyone else had a cafe worker who made the whole place feel like a second office, and did you ever find out what happened to them?
Did you ever try to find her on social media after that?
My best friend had almost the same thing happen at a diner in Chicago. She went every Sunday for like two years and the waitress always had her coffee ready and knew her usual eggs benedict order without asking. Then one weekend the waitress just wasn’t there anymore, and nobody at the diner would say where she went. Later my friend found out from another regular that she had moved to take care of her sick mom in Florida. My friend still talks about her sometimes, like she lost a close friend, not a waitress. It’s funny how someone you never really talk to can become such a steady part of your week without you noticing.
