Can we talk about hitting 400 long boxes and realizing my closet floor is bending
Last Saturday I finally finished moving my collection into the spare room and counted 412 long boxes stacked up, which is way more than I thought I had. My wife came in and pointed at the floor near the west wall and sure enough the boards are sagging about half an inch in the middle. Turns out 412 boxes at roughly 35 pounds each is over 7 tons sitting on a 1970s subfloor, and I never did the math until now. I spent Sunday pulling the bottom row out and sliding plywood sheets underneath, but I'm still nervous about what's happening under the carpet. I know some of you have way bigger collections than mine, so how are you handling floor weight in older houses? Do I need to talk to a contractor or is plywood and spreading the load out enough?
