Serious question, the guy at my local shop said skip the variant covers and I listened, now I'm wondering if that was dumb
I started collecting back in 2019 and the owner of the shop on Main in Boise gave me one piece of advice: don't chase variant covers, put that money into keys instead. I followed it for almost 3 years and grabbed a copy of New Mutants 98 and a few other keys while passing on probably 50 variants I liked the look of. Last weekend I checked sold prices on two of those variants and both had doubled, while one of my "smart" buys has been flat since I got it. I'm not saying he was wrong, but his advice felt way more solid than the results show. Has anyone else gotten a rule like that from a shop owner and watched it not pan out? I want to know if I should trust the next tip he gives me.
