A building inspector in Tacoma told me my backflow preventer install was a 'lawsuit waiting to happen'

He pointed out a single missing air gap on a hospital's medical gas line I'd just signed off on. Anyone else ever had a close call with a code detail that big?

Seriously, that checklist idea is the only way to sleep at night. You start relying on memory and your brain will absolutely blank on the one thing that matters. It turns a panic moment into just another box to tick.

Yeah, that'll get your attention fast. Go back, fix the air gap, and get a new sign off before anyone breathes that gas. I keep a checklist for final walk throughs now, just for things like that. Miss one small detail and the whole job's wrong.

But is a tiny air gap really that big of a deal? I've seen guys leave way bigger stuff wrong and it never gets called out. Sometimes the inspector just misses it or doesn't care. Are we overthinking every little step?
