A supply house guy in Tulsa told me to stop trusting the label on dielectric unions
Was picking up a few things at a supply house off 11th Street in Tulsa last month and the counter guy, Dale, said half the dielectric unions coming through his door are just coated steel with a fancy sticker on them. He pulled out a magnet and showed me one stick to the wrapper, then told me to check every batch that way before it goes on a water heater. I have been installing these for years and never once tested them, so now I am wondering how many I put in that are already rusting from the inside. Has anyone else run into this with a supplier, and did you switch brands or just start bringing your own magnet?
Magnet trick is smart but it only catches the steel core, not the cheap zinc coating that flakes off after a few months on hot water. Worth checking if the ones you already installed show rust at the threads when you drain a tank.
