A client in Atlanta asked me to fix his 'broken' laptop by just cleaning the fan

He brought it in, said it kept shutting down while he was gaming. I opened it up and the fan was completely clogged with dust and pet hair. After I cleaned it out with compressed air, it ran fine. He was shocked that was all it needed, and asked if I could show him how to do it himself next time. Do you guys ever walk customers through simple fixes like that, or do you think it hurts business?

My shop in Dallas probably loses a hundred bucks a year showing people how to reboot their routers. I figure the good will brings them back for the big stuff, like when they spill a beer on the actual machine. It's a nice change from the usual "you need a whole new logic board" talk.

That's just smart business.

Honestly, that's such a good way to look at it. A little time on the small stuff builds way more trust than just trying to sell them something. Makes people actually want to come back.
