Heard a homeowner say concrete is just gray dirt that gets hard

I was grabbing coffee last Tuesday before a 7am pour and this guy in line tells his buddy concrete is just gray dirt they let dry out. I wanted to turn around and explain curing, mix designs, and why his patio cracked in 6 months. Any of you ever had to bite your tongue when someone completely misses what we actually do?

Look, I was at a job site in Austin back in March where a guy tried to tell me you can just mix extra water into the bag to make it easier to work with. That's not how it works. Concrete is a chemical reaction, not just mud drying in the sun. You need the right water to cement ratio or your slab will turn into dust in a few years. The curing process is way more important than most people realize. I've seen 3 inch slabs crack because someone poured them on a hot day without wet curing. It's not magic dirt, it's engineered material that takes real knowhow to get right.

Watched a guy on a driveway job back in 2019 dump an extra gallon into the mixer because the concrete was "too stiff." Boss made him dig up the whole pour the next morning after it started cracking before it even cured. The worst part is people don't realize water affects the strength way more than the gravel or sand ever will. I always tell new guys the water ratio is something you measure, not something you guess at.
