Appreciation post: the retro game corner at my local library in Austin

Went to the library downtown last week to return some books and found they set up a little retro gaming station with a SNES and a PS1. They even had Mario Kart and Twisted Metal 2 with working controllers, which blew my mind. A kid was teaching his dad how to play, and it felt like a tiny peace treaty between generations. Anyone else got a random spot in their town that just gets it right?

That "tiny peace treaty" line really hit me, because my buddy Dave had the exact same thing happen at a laundromat in Pittsburgh of all places. He walked in to dry his clothes and some guy had set up a beat-up N64 on the folding table with GoldenEye. Dave was waiting on his load and ended up playing four-player deathmatch with this old timer who ran the place and two random kids. He told me the old guy kept calling the Z button the "shooty thing" and was absolutely wrecking everyone with proximity mines. I guess that's the thing about retro games, they skip the learning curve and just get people talking trash in the best way. Your library thing sounds way more organized than his setup, but the feeling is probably the same.
