The moment I realized my daily news diet was all propaganda, not journalism

It hit me about 3 months ago when I was watching two different cable news channels cover the same event. One was playing the clip with no comment, the other had a panel already shouting about it before the clip even ended. I started keeping a log for 2 weeks, just writing down the top stories from 3 sources each day. Turned out nearly 70 percent of the stories were just repeating the same press releases from the same 3 think tanks. Has anyone else stopped watching certain networks after noticing these patterns?

Oh man, I used to totally roll my eyes at people who said the news was slanted. I thought they were just being conspiracy minded. But then I started paying closer attention myself and it completely changed my mind. What you're saying about the 70 percent think tank repeat is spot on. And @the_robin, your point about the fact checking sites made me realize how deep this goes. I stopped watching the big cable channels after I noticed they all ran the same exact story angles for a whole week, just with different talking heads. It's scary how easy it is to just absorb that stuff without questioning where it actually came from.

Started checking fact checks against what the news was saying and realized half the time the fact check sites were also just quoting the same think tanks. Its like a big circle of people all yelling at each other about the same 5 press releases.
