Three days to fix a shower valve I thought would take 2 hours

Last month I took on a bathroom reno in Boise and the homeowner wanted a new shower valve. Easy swap, right? Turns out the old pipes were copper with some weird adapter that wasn't standard anymore, so nothing matched. I spent a full day calling around to three supply houses before one guy in Nampa told me about a discontinued fitting they had in the back. Two days later I got the part and finished, but the whole job turned into a 3 day mess for what should've been an afternoon. Has anyone else hit a wall with older plumbing that just refuses to match current fittings? What did you end up doing?

That "discontinued fitting they had in the back" is the REAL story here, and honestly I bet that part costs more than the whole valve now. Old plumbing never gets easier, it just waits for you to retire so it can ruin someone else's week.
