That awkward moment when my healthy snack alarmed a client

I brought celery sticks to crunch on for better diet. The sound caused a lady to think her hair was being cut with garden shears. Had to explain it was just my lunch.

Notice how everyday sounds get totally misread in quiet spaces, especially offices. I've had my apple crunching make someone check their phone thinking it was a keyboard click. It's way worse in a library or a waiting room where everyone's trying to be silent.

Honestly that's the opposite of my experience. Quiet rooms make it way easier to figure out where a sound comes from. Your brain isn't fighting a bunch of other noise so it can actually place the crunch or the click. The real problem is in a loud open office where ten people are typing and talking, that's when a single sound gets totally lost.

Yeah that bit about quiet rooms helping you place sounds makes sense @beth_coleman, but it can go the other way too. My friend was in a dead silent library once and dropped a single pen. The sound echoed and like three people at different tables all looked up at the same time, each convinced the noise came from right behind them. It was so quiet that the direction got totally messed up, lol. Everyone just heard a sharp tap and their brains pinned it on the closest person.
