Three hours on a single balayage section and I almost lost it

I had this client come in yesterday with this super dark box dye that she'd been layering on for like a year straight. She wanted a soft caramel balayage and I was like okay, I've done this before, no big deal. But her hair was so resistant from all that buildup that the lightener literally wouldn't lift past a brassy orange after two full processing sessions. I ended up having to do a third round with a different developer and stand there with foils for almost an hour just to get any kind of even lift. By the time I finally rinsed and toned, my back was killing me and I was running 45 minutes late for my next appointment. Has anyone else had a nightmare with stubborn box dye that just refuses to cooperate?

Those box dyes really test your patience sometimes.
