My brother in law said split screen Mario Kart would end friendships, and he was right about one thing
Back at Thanksgiving my brother in law Dave warned me not to put my two kids and their cousin on the same couch for Mario Kart 8 because 'somebody is gonna cry.' I laughed it off and set up four controllers anyway. Twenty minutes in, my 9 year old got hit with a blue shell on the final lap of Rainbow Road and launched the controller into the chip bowl. Dave just looked at me from the kitchen and said 'told ya' while my nephew cried about being in last place the whole race. So what games do you all play that keep the peace when kids of different skill levels share one screen?
Wait your uncle actually hid the whole console in his car? That is a level of done I have never reached but honestly I get it. Games where you take turns really do save the day, we started doing Wii bowling and the fighting dropped way off.
Reminds me of when my cousins and I used to play GoldenEye on the N64 at family reunions and my uncle finally unplugged the console and hid it in the trunk of his car. Nobody actually cried that time but you could feel it building. The real fix ended up being games where you take turns instead of playing at once, like Wii bowling or that Mario Party mode where everyone does their own thing. My kids still argue about who gets the good controller though, so I'm not sure there's any real cure for this. Somebody always ends up mad and it's usually the one who's worst at the game, which is a tough lesson when you're 7.
