I thought my roommate's 'clean as you go' rule was total nonsense until I timed myself washing one pan
When my roommate Dave moved in last August, he kept nagging me about cleaning while I cooked, and I told him he was being a control freak. I'd always been a pile-it-up guy, leave the dishes in the sink overnight, deal with it in the morning, simple. But then he bet me 40 bucks that his way was faster, so we timed it. One night I made stir fry and let the pan sit with dried sauce while we ate, and scrubbing that thing took me almost 9 minutes of soaking and scraping. The next night I rinsed the same pan right after cooking, while it was still hot, and it took 40 seconds. I hate admitting he was right, but the numbers don't lie, and now I do it every time. So to everyone on here who swears by the overnight soak, when was the last time you actually put a timer on it?
Watched my old roommate do the same experiment with a cast iron skillet and the gap was even worse, like 12 minutes of scrubbing versus under a minute if you hit it while it's still warm. The trick is you're not even really washing it at that point, you're just wiping sauce off before it turns into cement. I used to swear the soak was doing the work for me but really I was just giving the food time to bond with the pan at a molecular level. Dave owes you a beer for being right, and honestly he earned it.
