The day my character outline flipped from plan to chaos, and why I'm keeping it
I spent 3 years outlining every plot beat before writing a word. Last Tuesday I joined a sprint prompt challenge where we had 20 minutes to write a scene with no prep, just a random word generator. My scene about a librarian finding a locked drawer turned into a hostage negotiation because my character started lying to me mid paragraph. That one messy draft felt more alive than all my planned chapters combined. I spent this week rewriting my whole novel outline to leave gaps for surprises. Has anyone else switched from detailed planning to discovery writing after a single chaotic session?

Got a buddy who spent months mapping out a fantasy trilogy and then did one of those random dialogue prompts with a friend. His villain started cracking jokes mid scene and now he has a whole side plot about a comedian necromancer he never planned. He says the outline is just a suggestion now.
