Had to pick between a pun my kid would actually laugh at or a groaner for the adults at the cookout
Last Sunday at my brother's backyard cookout, I had two dad joke options ready: one about a lazy kangaroo that my 8-year-old niece would crack up at, and another about a broken pencil that's pointless but hits harder with the grownups. I went with the kangaroo pun and got dead silence from the adults but my niece laughed so hard she spit out her lemonade. Has anyone else bombed with one crowd just to score big with the kids?

Oh man, I've done this so many times. Totally feel you on that. Last month I told a joke about a sandwich walking into a bar and my nephew was the only one who got it, but he laughed for like five minutes straight. Meanwhile my sister-in-law just stared at me like I had three heads. But honestly, that kid's laugh is worth way more than the adults rolling their eyes. I've learned to just aim for the kids and let the grownups deal with it. Makes the whole cookout way more fun when you're not trying to please everyone.
