honestly the bait and switch thing works for so much stuff. i started doing that with my whole approach to problems and people are way more open to hearing me out when i don't lead with the punchline.

Yeah, the "don't lead with the punchline" part is smart. I've done that with my brother when he gets defensive about money advice. Instead of saying "you spend too much on takeout," I start by asking how his week was and what he's been cooking. @the_robert is right, people shut down less when you ease into the real point. Works way better for getting them to actually listen.
