That rattling wheel cover almost got me stranded on I-75 last night
I do rideshare part time on weekends, and last night around 11 pm outside of Cincinnati, a hubcap or wheel cover started making this awful grinding noise on my rear passenger side. Pulled over at a gas station off exit 12 and found three of the five lug nuts had backed off somehow, like they were barely hanging on. The plastic cover had been catching air and wearing down the studs, which is scary when you think about it (the studs, not the cover). I had a spare tire but no torque wrench or anything, so I just tightened the remaining nuts with the factory tool and babied it 30 miles home doing 45 mph with hazards on. This happened after I rotated my tires three weeks ago, so I'm wondering if the shop cross threaded one. Has anyone else had lug nuts work loose after a rotation, and did you go back to the shop or just fix it yourself?
Hang on, are we SURE this is the shop's fault? Loose lug nuts after a rotation happen, sure, but they usually show up within the first 50 miles, not three weeks later. Sounds more like they were never torqued right in the first place, or you picked up some crud on the hub when you put the wheel back on. That grinding noise is usually the cover, not the studs, and those things rattle for a long time before anything actually snaps. You drove 30 miles at 45 mph and it held, so it wasn't THAT close to falling off. Go back to the shop, yeah, but don't expect them to admit anything. They might just say "tighten it yourself" and call it a day.
