Hit $5,000 in monthly passive income last month - took me 3 years of slow building

I started selling simple digital guides on Etsy back in 2021 while bouncing between hostels in Thailand. Last month my Stripe payout finally crossed the $5,000 mark, which is more than I was making at my old desk job. Anyone else hit a number that made you stop and realize this lifestyle actually works?

The whole "stopped and realized this lifestyle actually works" part feels a bit dramatic to me. $5,000 is solid money, don't get me wrong, but calling it a lifestyle realization after three years of grinding on Etsy seems like setting the bar pretty low. Most people I know who do digital products are either barely scraping by or already scaling way past that without making it sound like some deep life moment. It's good income, but you're still tied to a platform that could change its rules or an algorithm that decides your luck. I'm just not convinced a single payout number is proof that this whole thing is as reliable as people make it out to be.

Right? I actually had the exact same thing happen, same feeling when my Shopify hit $4,800 one month and I was like wait this is actually real. @rileyjones makes a solid point though, especially about the platform risk, I lost a bunch of sales when Etsy changed their fee structure last year and had to pivot quick. Still, hitting a number that beats your old paycheck is a trip.
