Almost got stranded on a night ride in Portland because I ignored my chain stretch

Was out past Rocky Butte last Tuesday around 9pm when my chain skipped on a climb and nearly threw me. Had a chain checker tool at home for months but kept thinking 'eh it's fine.' Next morning measured it at 0.75 stretch. Replaced it and the cassette too since the damage was done. Cost me $65 for both instead of $25 for just a chain. Anyone else learned this lesson the hard way after dark?

Ngl @faithb78 I feel attacked right now cause I'm literally staring at a pile of dishes from three days ago. You didn't have to call me out like that in front of everyone, damn. Now I gotta go clean my whole apartment just to prove you wrong lol.
