I finally gave in and bought a $60 chain wear tool after guessing wrong for 2 years

Cost me a new cassette and chainring when the old chain stretched way past what I thought was fine, has anyone else had a cheap chain checker lie to them before?

Your chain checker was probably fine. $60 for a tool that does the same job as a $10 one is just paying for nicer packaging and a smoother feel in your hand. The real issue is that people get lazy about replacing chains and then blame the tool when the damage is already done. If you had checked at the right intervals and replaced when the tool was barely showing wear, you would have been fine. The cassette and chainring wore out because you let it go too long, not because the tool lied.

Those cheap checkers can actually be hit or miss depending on the brand, some read a little loose or tight right out of the package. Sounds like yours was fine but just letting you know the variable ones do exist.
