Last Tuesday my cheap drip coffee turned into something I'd actually pay for at a cafe

I threw a pinch of salt and a drop of vanilla extract into my $5 bag of Folgers and my roommate walked in asking what fancy beans I just bought has anyone else tried adding salt to cut the bitterness?

Oh come on. Salt in coffee sounds like a desperate move from someone who bought the cheapest beans possible and now wants to trick their taste buds into thinking it’s fancy. If your coffee’s so bitter you need to add seasoning, maybe just buy a better bag of grounds instead of trying to hack your way through it.

Salt is actually a legit trick that some coffee shops use, it's not just some desperate hack. A tiny pinch cuts the bitterness without making it taste salty at all. It's more about balancing flavors than covering up bad beans. Way different than dumping sugar or cream in there to mask everything.
