Made a tiny desk terrarium out of a mason jar last weekend
I glued some pebbles and moss into a jar I had sitting around, and now it's got a little fern growing in it after just 5 days. The whole thing cost me maybe $4 at the local dollar store for the dirt and plants. Has anyone else tried keeping a closed terrarium alive on their desk without it getting moldy?

That fern needs airflow actually, mason jars trap too much moisture without a lid crack.

You could try adding a layer of activated charcoal between the pebbles and the dirt. I put some in mine after seeing mold start to form and it actually sucked up all that extra moisture and kept things fresh. The fern in my jar has been going strong for two months now with the lid on tight. That little trick made all the difference for me because the mold never came back. Plus it only costs a buck or two at a pet store in the fish tank section.
