Spent 6 hours on a pencil holder that should have taken one

I tried making a simple wooden pencil holder for my desk. Thought it would be a quick sand and glue job. But I couldn't get the holes straight no matter what. I ended up drilling 12 holes into scrap wood before I got one that didn't wobble. Six hours later I had a block with five crooked slots. At least my pens don't roll off the desk anymore. Anyone else have a small project that turned into a whole afternoon?

Tape a level to your drill bit next time. I learned that trick framing houses and it saves so much frustration. Also if you pre drill with a smaller bit first it gives the bigger bit something to follow. Six hours is rough but hey now you got a conversation starter for your desk at least.

Actually the level trick works but you gotta make sure the level is actually level first before taping it on. I've seen people tape a level that's off by a couple degrees and wonder why their holes are still crooked. Also pre drilling with a smaller bit is good advice but you really want to use something like a 1/8 inch bit for most screw sizes not just anything smaller. Six hours is definitely rough though, at least you got a funny story out of it and that desk hole is probably straight as an arrow now.
