Spilled engine oil on my concrete floor and tried a $12 cat litter trick

I was changing the oil on my '92 Miata last weekend in Phoenix and dropped the drain pan, leaving a big puddle on the garage floor. Grabbed a bag of cheap clumping cat litter from the dollar store to soak it up, figured it couldn't hurt since I was out of kitty litter. Has anyone else used cat litter for messy spills in their garage, or is there a better budget trick I should know about?

Kitty litter for a little oil spill seems like overkill.

Campbell I gotta disagree with you on this one. Back when I lived in an apartment with no garage at all I had a small 2-stroke weedeater leak on my patio and used maybe half a cup of cat litter to soak it up. For a big puddle from a dropped drain pan like that, the cat litter is actually perfect because it turns the oil into little clumps you can sweep up easy (way better than spreading it around with paper towels). I'd rather use a $12 bag of litter than spend $30 on special absorbent pads from the auto parts store. It's not like you're dumping the whole bag out there either, just enough to cover the spill.
