PSA: Don't blow $150 on a monitor arm that doesn't fit your desk

I bought a fancy gas spring arm without checking if my desk had a lip on the back edge. Wasted 2 hours trying to clamp it on before I realized it wouldn't work. Anyone else made this mistake or found a cheap workaround?

Gonna disagree here - that's on you for not measuring first, not the arm's fault. I've had cheap clamp-on arms hold up just fine on janky desks for years without issues.

Haven't you ever had a desk where the lip is just a little too thin or the edge is rounded weird? I've seen cheap arms strip out the clamp threads on desks with soft particle board edges, and then it's not a measuring problem, it's a design flaw. I had one that worked fine for six months then slowly sagged because the gas spring gave out, desk measurements had nothing to do with that. And if you've got a glass desk like some people do, a clamp arm is basically a gamble no matter how much you check the thickness. So I get it if the arm did its job for you, but I've had the opposite experience too many times to blame it all on not measuring.
