PSA: Stop buying old cast iron with that nasty orange rust thinking it's easy to fix

That nasty orange rust" is the part that gets me. Some people see that orange patina and think they're about to put in a little elbow grease and get a hundred dollar pan for five bucks. But half the time you're looking at rust that has pitted the surface so bad it's basically garbage. I've seen folks spend months scrubbing and seasoning a pan that still flakes rust into their eggs. You might as well go buy a new Lodge for thirty bucks and save yourself the headache. Those old pans can be great if the rust is just surface level, but most of the time it's a trap.

You ever try the vinegar soak trick and still end up with pitting you can feel with your fingernail? lol thats the real test right there if you can feel the pits its pretty much over. Ive salvaged a few old pans but only when the rust was just that light orange dust that wipes off with a paper towel. Anything deeper and youre fighting a losing battle.
