Update: My smart lock bricked itself during a routine firmware update
It was a Schlage Encode, and it just went completely dark halfway through the update last Tuesday. I had to call a locksmith in Tacoma to get back into my own house, which cost $120. Everyone says to always update your devices, but this experience has me seriously questioning that advice for critical hardware. Has anyone else had a smart home update go this catastrophically wrong?

Updates just break things now, it's normal.

My Nest thermostat had a bad update last year that messed up the schedule, but a factory reset fixed it in ten minutes. That Schlage lock failure sounds like a rare hardware fault, not a normal update problem. I've done dozens of updates on my smart lights and plugs without a single brick. Skipping updates leaves you open to way worse security bugs that could let someone in for real. The advice is still solid, you just got super unlucky this time.
