My aunt said my cornbread was too sweet for chili, so I cut the sugar in half.
She told me, 'Real Southern cornbread shouldn't taste like cake.' I tried her way, using only a tablespoon of sugar, and it balanced the spice way better. Anyone have a strong opinion on sweet vs. savory cornbread for their family meals?

Oh please, that's just regional gatekeeping. A little sweetness in cornbread is a classic comfort food move, it's not supposed to be a cracker. My family's recipe has always been on the sweeter side and it makes the whole meal better, chili included.

@perez.barbara, what's your family's sweet cornbread recipe secret, a bit of honey or straight sugar?

Remember when my friend's southern grandma tried his sweet cornbread and just sighed?
