My aunt's secret ingredient for cornbread is a can of cream soda

She wrote the recipe down for me last Thanksgiving in Cleveland. It called for one 12-ounce can of cream soda, mixed right into the batter. I tried it at home and the whole thing came out flat and weirdly sweet. Called her up and she just laughed, said 'Honey, I meant to write cream STYLE corn, the soda is for me to drink while I cook.' Has anyone else had a family recipe with a totally wild misprint?

Oh that is honestly the best mix-up I've ever heard. I can just picture the confusion, pulling a soda out of the pantry for a cornbread recipe. My grandma's old meatloaf card says "one cup of bread crumbs" but her handwriting is so bad, my dad once used a cup of brown sugar. We had the sweetest, weirdest meatloaf that night. It's like these family recipes are a test you have to pass.

But what if the weird version is better?

Our chili recipe once called for two bay leaves, not two bay leeks.
